读外刊文章时，我们经常会发现其结构非常清晰。相应地，很多段落都有很简练地道的topic sentence，并不是很多人推荐的高大上的复杂的模板句。今天我就借鉴经济学人中的一些句子并做些改动，将这些句子应用于我们的英文写作中，尤其是段落的主题句。
1. 对现象的讨论
外刊原句：
Workers ditching old jobs for better ones has been a feature of the post-covid American economy.
新冠之后美国经济的特点之一就是员工频频跳槽以寻求更好的工作机会。
句型：… has been a feature of ...
这个句型可用于首段落讨论某种社会现象，例如：
Hybrid working was a feature of the pandemic period.
疫情期间的特点之一是很多公司采纳了灵活工作制（即远程工作和线下工作相结合）。
University graduates pursuing further study to increase their competitiveness is a feature of the contemporary society.
大学毕业生继续求学以增强自身竞争力是当代社会的特点之一。
2. 对趋势的判断
外刊原句：
In recent weeks speculation has grown that seclusion may at last be easing.
最近几周，越来越多的人认为（朝鲜）这种与外界隔绝的状态最终会减轻。
句型：Speculation has grown that …
这里的that从句是speculation的同位语从句。
我们可以用这个句式来表达人们对某种现象的观点，可以放在首段落，接下去可以去赞同或反驳。例如：
Speculation has grown that the boom in AI technology will eventually put many out of work.
越来越多的人认为AI技术的发展最终会使很多人失业。
3. 对他人观点的评价
外刊原句：
Yet expectations that the regime has any serious plans for a wider opening are probably misguided.
但是认为这个政权有进一步开放计划的期待可能受到了误导。
句型：Yet expectations that … are probably misguided.
言下之意，作者对他人的看法是持反对态度的，措辞上比较委婉，注意小词的运用，如yet, probably。议论文中经常会出现probably, might, seems这类非绝对词，是为了体现论证的严谨性。Misguided比wrong也要委婉的多。这句话可用在驳斥段落的首句。
类似的驳斥段落句型还有：
However, the claim/statement that … may be misleading.
That conclusion may be too hasty.
4. 分析深层次原因
外刊原句：
But there are deeper issues at play, too.
但是还有更深层次的问题在起作用。
这句话可替换成But there are deeper forces at play/at work, too. (但是还有更深层次的原因)。在段落拓展时需注意的是主题句中出现的是issues/forces等复数名词，论证时必须给出2个及2个以上的理由。
如果仅仅是分析原因，可以改成例如There are three forces at play.的句子。
5. 引出现有问题
外刊原句：
The situation is unlikely to improve any time soon.
情况不会马上改善。
这句话的言下之意是There are still some problems existing. 那么拓展时就可以具体讲讲阻碍improvement的因素还有哪些。
6. 引出更好的解决方案
外刊原句：
There is a different, and better, way of constructing the Beveridge curve.
我们还有另外的更好的办法去构建Beveridge曲线。
句型：There is a different, and better, way of doing …
这个句子很简单，我们也可以换些词去替代different或better，例如feasible, practical, cost-effective等。
7. 汲取人生道理
外刊原句：
There may be a more profound lesson to draw.
我们或许更得出更深刻的教训。
这句话去掉more也没问题，就是得出一个深刻的教训，比较适合考研英语中的图画作文。
通过以上这些外刊的topic sentence，我们发现其实使我们的作文更加impressive的是development的过程，而无需过分追求漂亮的模板句。
